Christian Sanderson

In the early 1900’s, the school teacher was Christian Sanderson, the leader of the folk band, the Pocopson Boys.    He was a local historian and a colorful member of the community.  The West Chester Daily Local dated December 28, 1906 states:

Christian Sanderson, teacher at Locust Grove School, gave an excellent entertainment on Wednesday evening, December 23rd consisting of music, recitations, and gymnastic drills.  The music and drills were especially well rendered and both teacher and pupils deserve a great deal of credit for the manner in which the entertainment was conducted.  The school room was tastefully decorated with wreaths, Christmas changes and Chinese lanterns, with an immense Christmas tree filling one corner of the stage.  The entertainment was listened to by an appreciative audience consisting of about 100 or 125 of the patrons and friends of the surrounding neighborhood.  Several members of the School Board were present.  The president made a little address, complimenting the teacher and pupils on the success of the entertainment…  Kriss Kringle appeared at the end of the entertainment and presented each pupil with a box of candy.
